Merwin Brown, pharmacy tech, was chosen Employee of the Quarter at the hospital's September Employee Celebration.
Merwin Brown was recently named South Mississippi State Hospital’s third quarter 2017 Employee of the Quarter. Brown came to SMSH in June 2014 as a pharmacy technician.
"Merwin has been a wonderful addition to the SMSH staff,” said Cindy Jackson, SMSH pharmacist. “He is caring, experienced and dedicated to providing our patients with the highest level of care.”
A Forrest County native and resident, Brown is a graduate of Hattiesburg High School. He attended William Carey College for two years and transferred to the University of Southern Mississippi, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in 2005 in Mass Communication and Journalism with an emphasis in Radio Broadcasting and a minor in English.
Brown has been a pharmacy technician for seven years and is registered through the Mississippi State Board of Pharmacy and nationally certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Before coming to SMSH, he worked for CVS Pharmacy in Hattiesburg.
“I love the fact that we are here [at SMSH] to heal broken minds,” said Brown. “We work as hard as we can each day to erase stigmas regarding mental illness and to assure our patients it’s no different than any other illness. Their healing brings me a sense of achievement.”
In his spare time, Brown enjoys reading, writing poetry, and spending time with family and Friends. He is a member of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. and of Friends of South Mississippi State Hospital.
“He helps bridge the gap between the administration building and the clinical units with his bubbly personality and great spirit,” said April Holder, nurse executive. “He communicates well with the patients and staff.”
Brown also serves as the hospital’s Santa Claus for patient Christmas parties each year and performs at various hospital activities.
