Melanie Ingram was recently named South Mississippi State
Hospital’s first quarter 2017 Employee of the Quarter. Ingram first came to SMSH as a music therapy
intern in 2011 and was hired PRN as an active treatment technician following
her internship. She began as a full-time recreational therapist in October 2012
upon her accreditation as a certified music therapist.
“Melanie is an excellent music therapist and recreation therapist
who continually goes above and beyond to help our patients,” said Dr. Scott
Willoughby, SMSH Program Director. “She approaches her work with great energy
and passion as well as compassion. I am
always impressed by her paperwork, as well; it is impeccable.”
Currently a Lamar County resident, Ingram is a graduate of Quitman
High School. She attended Jones County Junior College for two years and
transferred to William Carey University to earn a Bachelor’s degree in music
education in 2002. She returned to WCU
in 2009 and obtained her music therapy degree in 2012. Ingram has been accepted into the Master’s
program at the University of Southern Mississippi to begin work on a degree in
child and family studies this fall.
Ingram is also a certified Mandt instructor at SMSH. The Mandt System is a
comprehensive, integrated approach to preventing, de-escalating, and if
necessary, intervening when the behavior of an individual poses a threat of
harm to themselves and/or others.
“The thing I like most about my job will always be the patients,”
said Ingram. “Recreation therapy is the time of day where the patients get to
unwind and have a good time, and that is really important.”
Before coming to SMSH, Ingram worked as an elementary music
teacher and assistant band director in the Forrest County School District.
She is a member of the American Music Therapy Association, Pine
Belt Pacers, a book club at the Hattiesburg Public Library, a running growth
group at Venture Church, and is an Emerald-level member of Friends of SMSH.
Ingram has two children, Meredith (12) and Micah (10). In her spare time, she enjoys time with them,
running and participating in races, playing her guitar, painting and creative
arts, and Netflix.
