PURVIS, Miss. -- Helen Little was recently named South Mississippi State Hospital’s first quarter Employee of the Quarter. She began working at SMSH as the social work director in August 2002.
“Helen is able to communicate effectively with patients as well as with staff and family members,” said Mary Adams, a member of Little’s staff. “She works very well with other disciplines and is ‘all about’ teamwork.”
Little is a resident of Marion County. She is a Licensed Certified Social Worker and holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in social work from the University of Southern Mississippi. Little is also a Board Certified Diplomat with the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work and is certified by the Mississippi Department of Mental Health as a Mental Health Therapist. She is currently working to complete the Certified Public Manager program through the Mississippi State Personnel Board.
Little’s work history has been primarily in the mental health field in both inpatient and outpatient settings. She has worked with children and adults in Mississippi and Louisiana.
“This is a very rewarding job,” said Little. “It is a privilege to play a role in assisting people along the way in the journey to recovery from mental illness. It is an honor to be allowed into people’s lives. I pray for the day when those individuals who have a mental illness are no longer stigmatized but are accepted as the valuable members of society that they are.”
Away from work, she enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, gardening and reading. South Mississippi State Hospital (SMSH) is a 50-bed acute care behavioral health program in Purvis that offers mental health treatment and services for adults in the southern part of the state. The hospital’s Friends of SMSH organization recognizes an outstanding employee each quarter and provides service pins and incentive-related supplies and activities for hospital staff as well as needed services and events for patients. Friends of SMSH is a volunteer-based, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting understanding of mental health and the needs of individuals with mental illness, improving the quality of life for patients, and providing recognition and support for employees.
